刘翔小学时就开始了体育训练，曾经练过跳高和跑步。由于他的身体条件非常好，13岁时被著名教练孙海平发现，开始专门进行跨栏运动训练。

In 2006, Liuxiang once again broke the world record with the result of 12.88 second.

In 2001, he won the Men's 110m hurdles championship in the 9th National Sports Games; in 2002, he won the men's 110m hurdles championship in the 14th Asian Games; and at the Athens Olympic Games two years later, Liu Xiang won the Olympic gold medal in the men’s 110m hurdles competition with a score of 12 seconds and 91 and broke the Olympic record. In 2006, Liu Xiang again broke the world record with a score of 12 seconds and 88.
